Wind Damage to Roofs

Severe weather is always a real threat to any part of your home, but your roof tends to take most of the effects since it covers everything beneath it. Believe it or not, one of the most common issues that necessitates roof repair is wind damage. Even if it’s sunny and there’s no sign of rain, a strong enough gust of wind can do some serious damage.

Perhaps the most common effect of wind damage is the removal of shingles. Over time, the shingles on your roof will deteriorate due to age, sun, and general weather. At advanced stages like these, your shingles will be more susceptible to strong winds, and they may be torn off. With this area of your roof exposed, you run the risk of seeing water damage on the inside of your home, along with the continued destruction of your roof. Be sure to have a professional roofer look at the quality of your shingles in order to determine their life expectancy.

Another element that causes a good amount of damage to roofs is falling debris. In strong wind storms, tree branches and loose particles can fly around very hectically. Those trees around your home can be very beautiful majority of the time, but even the slightest movement can do damage. Branches scratch shingles, pinecones or needles can clog gutter systems, and even in more rare cases an entire limb can come crashing down. Even when there’s no damage to the surface of your roof, a strong wind can cause debris to get lodged in your gutter systems; this ultimately can cause poor drainage and therefore water damage to your roof.

Though serious occurrences are rare, there are times when wind can cause a roof to separate from your home. As wind travels, it’s always looking for a way upwards. If a gust of wind catches underneath an overhang, the entire roof is preventing its upward trajectory. Over time, this effect can weaken the seal between the home and the roof, and eventually it could cause a complete break. These occurrences aren’t obvious when looking at the home, and therefore can go unnoticed until it’s too late. If you have a prominent overhang that has suffered some serious wind storms, it’s not a bad idea to have a professional roofer take a look. This goes for any of these problems, as the health of your roof is very important as it’s one of the main aspects that holds your home together.
